Our HIV/Aids Project has moved
According to the World Bank, HIV rates in Malawi peaked in 1999 at over 16%. This has had a devastating impact on families and communities, and is one of the reasons Malawi has so many orphans. Our original project began at Jali Youth Center. In a recent government inspection Jali YC was acknowledged as the best provision in the Zomba district for HIV testing, education and counselling. However, after several years at Jali we are on the move. The most recent testing results are producing HIV positive results less than 3% (national average in 2017 was 10%). The staff at Jali believe it is time to move to an area that needs this provision more and therefore closed Jali at the end of February 2018.
Our new project is located at Songani - 10 miles north of Zomba. We are currently in a temporary rented building but right now with the support of a very generous sponsor building work has started on a brand new youth centre. This will be a fantastic resource and community building. The land was purchased in July 2018 and we will keep this page updated with developments.
This Center is sponsored by Manor CE Academy in York who raise funds each month through their non-uniform day. In addition the project owns and runs a maize mill, funded by the York Corinthians Charity providing additional income. Other sponsors provide daily newspapers and books for the library.
The staff are an amazing group. They are totally dedicated to the task and over the years they have won the trust of their community.
CAN YOU HELP?
- There is always more that can be done and we are looking for fundraisers to support the HIV work. We are looking for sponsors who can afford £5/month. Extra funding will enable us to emply a second HIV counsellor.
- The project needs resources for its library. Local school students often come to study because their secondary schools lack essential text books.
- Consider joining us on one of our visits to Malawi and offering a workshop or simply learning more about the work that is being carried out.
- Do a Gap Project based at the HIV project and offer activities that will help attract people to the Center.
